Learning Palace

Being new to the area, I sometimes like to drive around just to see what is in the area.  Driving around also sometimes gets my girls to nap, which hasn’t been happening since they turned 2.  During one of my excursions to nowhere, I noticed a store called The Learning Palace.  The Learning Palace is a wonderful educational toy store that is locally owned and just celebrated their 30th anniversary.  We happened to stop in the store the first time the day before their 30th anniversary party, so we came back the next day.

On our second trip, we brought Dad with as he is just as excited by educational toy stores as I am.  The store carries educational toys, workbooks, kits, and supplies for nearly every age range.  While living in Las Vegas, I never found a store that carried similar items.  I may have just not found one, but I am not certain there were any.  I was so happy to find a store that values children as much as I do.

We were very impressed by the level of knowledge of the staff and the customer service they provided.  They had lots of product knowledge and many ideas to tackle learning challenges.  We visited the Gresham location and I am excited to visit the other locations as well.

During the anniversary party, there were lots of activities for my daughters to try.  They played with do-a-dot markers and made their own bead bracelets.  The train set is always a lot of fun and they got to play with other kids with the trains.  There was also a raffle, which my girls won.  They picked this wonderful toy from Melissa and Doug.Overall, I am very pleased with this store.  Customer service is the most important thing to me when I shop, and I will always gladly pay more and drive further to shop at a store that has good customer service.  I am happy this store is very close to my new home as I will be visiting often.  For those of you who don’t live in the area, The Learning Palace also offers an online catalog.  I highly recommend it to everyone!

Ox Bow Park

While driving around looking for something fun to do, I happened across signs to a park nearby.  I had assumed it was a small park with a jungle gym that would occupy my girls for awhile.  I was so excited when I discovered Ox Bow Park.

The park is hidden away at the bottom of a ravine in what seems like farm country.  On the drive to the park we passed tree farms and country homes.  We were greeted by moss covered trees and the Sandy River meandering through the hills as we descended into the ravine.

There are lots of what appear to be great hiking trails, however, we were wearing sandals and were completely ill-equipped to hike.  We stopped at one of the play grounds and played on the jungle gym.  Then we walked around and learned about some of the new things the girls were seeing.  Not many moss covered pine trees in the desert :)

Fun with Static Electricity

Being a huge science geek I love when fun sciencey things happen.  Static electricity seems to be very prevalent in the desert.  I always seem to be getting zapped when I touch things and have inadvertently zapped my girls more often than I can count.  At first it really upset them, they seemed to think I was punishing them.  Now they seem to realize it is not on purpose and seem to think it is funny when they zap me.

I am looking forward to showing them the fine art of hanging a balloon on the wall with static electricity and taking them to science museums to play with Van de Graaf generators when they are older.  Until they are old enough to do this, getting their hair to stand on end will have to suffice.
