Growing up in the Northwest, slugs were practically an everyday sight if you ventured outdoors. They never really bothered me, except when the back patio would be covered in slime trails. My Grandma however, she detests these guys. She would salt them and say you could could practically hear them scream. For all of you who have never been around them, salt will kill a slug in a rather nasty way.
I personally kind of like slugs. They may be slimy, but they eat decaying matter, plants and sometimes other slugs, snails or earthworms. When attacked, they kind of curl up and secret mucus to make them taste icky, plus they can also self-amputate part of their tail to aid in their escape from a predator.
Today while walking with my daugthers in the wetlands behind our house, we came across a slug.
This little guy was munching on a dandelion. We talked about what he was and what he eats. We also talked about how he is important even if he is kind of icky. This was my girls first slug encounter and they were very fascinated with him. After talking about him and taking his picture to taunt my Grandma with, we left him to finish eating his flower.
It is great fun to get to share the wonders of nature with my girls. I love seeing their faces light up with they are presented with some new wonderful thing. They love learning and seem to take an extreme interest in the natural world.
