Potty Training Success!!

Our family has been working on potty training for awhile now, not as long as some family members think we should.  We have tried a few tactics and have had a few minor successes.  The biggest success the girls have both had is realizing what they are supposed to happen on the potty.

Both girls realize after the fact that they have “gone” in their diaper.  We taught them this not by using pull-ups, but by putting underwear on under their diapers.  When they wet themselves, the underwear stayed wet.  They have been running to the potty after they wet themselves for a few weeks now, but haven’t had the control to get to the potty beforehand.

Knowing after thorough research, it seems the limiting factor to potty training is muscle control.  They have to be able to control the potty muscles to be successful and this control comes with age.  Some kids develop control sooner than others and every kid is different.  Instead of taking the old school approach of sitting them on the potty every hour for weeks and stressing over potty time, we have taken the laid back approach.

We know the girls understand the concept as they demonstrate the knowledge every time they soil their diaper.  Wet and dirty diapers bother Nadia and Nicole just as much as they bother us.  When they wet their diapers, we talk about potty’ing and where it should happen.

Today, we had a major success.  Nadia has been rushing to the potty for the last few days and taking off her own diaper, but has yet to hold it long enough.  Today she made it.  She got her diaper off (it was still dry) and sat on the potty and pee’d in the potty all by herself.  After lots of praise and high fives, we cleaned the potty.  She has made a few more attempts throughout the day and almost made it.

We are almost there and very anxious for this major step in childhood to be accomplished.  Good job Nadia Padia!!

Adventures in Potty Training Pt. 2

Sadly our first real attempt at potty training was not completely successful.  We knew it was a possibility as the girls were still young, 18 months, and all literature says this was the early point they may be potty trained.

We had spent a week diaperless and spending a lot of time sitting on the potty.  We had a few successes.  Nadia definitely seemed to be getting the idea, but didn’t have the muscle control necessary.  She would run to the potty but have already potty’ed.  Nicole liked sitting on the potty, but didn’t seem to get the connection.

We did not want the potty to be an unhappy place.  Instead of forcing the issue and creating a stressful situation for all of us, we decided to back off and try again later. In the interim, we talked about potty time and had the girls see me and my Mom using the potty.

Both girls are intrigued by the whole potty process.  They like to play act with their potty and seem to be more understanding of the whole process.  They have become active in their own diaper changing and have had more control over this aspect of their lives.

Yesterday, while getting the girls dressed to leave the house Nadia pulled her pants down and pulled off her diaper.  She ran to her potty and sat down.  She obviously was trying to use her potty, however, nothing came out.  She had used the diaper in her frantic rush to get everything off.  She seemed upset that she had “failed” and needed lots of reassurance that she did a good job.  Afterwards, Nicole insisted on stripping off her clothes and trying the potty.

It appears another real attempt at potty training is in order for at least Nadia.  She is giving more and more signs that she is ready.  While I would love to start tomorrow, I will probably wait until after the holidays.  It is unfair to her to only give part of my attention to the process while I am distracted preparing for the upcoming holidays.  The extra few weeks should give her more control and increase her chances of success.

Adventures in Potty Training, Pt 1

There comes a day in every little girls life where she needs to learn the important step of using the big girl potty.  Today is the day for Nadia and Nicole.

Nadia and Nicole have been showing signs of being ready for potty training for quite awhile.  Every family member has told me I need to start potty training them.  The thing no one seems to remember is I am the mother of twins.  All attempts that have been made to potty train my girls have ended in bare-bottomed babies fighting over their potty chair (yes we do have two).  As funny as it sounds, it is not very fun to clean up.

Charles has decided to use the two weeks of vacation time from work that he has been accumulating all year.  This means I have a helper for the next two week.  There will never be a more perfect time to tackle this task.

So far there have been no successes.  There have been some close calls and more importantly, the girls are seeming to get the idea of what they should be doing.  With any luck this process will proceed quickly and my girls will be one step closer to asking for the car keys.
